We all have different interests, likes, and loves.
If you’re not sure what yours are, just think about the things that you’re hard on yourself about, or places you wish you could do better.
I’ll start.
Parenting. Health and wellness. Writing. Hair.
These are the big ones.
They have my interest, and I care about doing them well.
I know this, because I am always trying to see how I can improve them. Or measure up to someone else I know and admire who does them.
(I sure the hell don’t care how my singing voice is, because I can’t sing. So literally no energy goes there.)
Now here’s the part we all need to think about when it comes to our likes, interests, and passions: What’s your standard of success? Do we feel like we’re successful, positive, and moving forward? Or do we feel like giant losers who can’t seem to win or measure up?
Spoiler alert: There is no standard.
(Ok, if you’re a professional whatever, or win prestigious and well-known awards… sure. Of course. But I’m talking my everyday people just surviving and trying to thrive.)
Let’s use parenting, and say our measure of success as a parent is what type of kid we raise. What makes us a successful parent? Are they an excellent athlete? Are they a kind an empathetic human? Did they receive a full ride scholarship to an Ivy League school? Are they happy? Do they have a solid relationship with you?
Or how about athletic performance or wellness? How do you know if you’re successful? Is it winning marathons? Bikini competitions? Pilates and green smoothies? The Hyrox? Powerlifting? Being able to run with your kids? A 100% clean diet? Liking your appearance in the mirror?
Or writing. Is it publishing a book? Publishing a book that people purchase? Is it on Amazon? Or a bestseller list?
And last on my list is hair. Am I a successful hairstylist if I have 1000 clients? If I have a million insta followers on my fancy hair page? If I’m an extension specialist? If I make over $150K a year? If I’m booked out for months?
Turns out, it’s completely up to YOU.
If you’re measuring your success based on what somebody else does, you might just keep ‘failing’.
It’s like weighing yourself in kilograms, when you’ve only measured your weight in pounds your whole life: It doesn’t make sense to use a system you don’t know in order to get an answer.
In fact, using metrics that don’t make sense could get downright depressing, and make anybody feel like a loser.
So get in your own lane, Loser!
Strive to be great in the things that light you up.
And make sure ‘great’ is defined by you and YOUR parameters- no explanations needed.
Because greatness is Luxuriously Dope. 🖤
