I don’t know who needs to hear this, but the end goal shouldn’t be to ‘Not Give a Damn’.
(I know. The title doesn’t use ‘damn’. But my anxiety won’t let me use the other word for a post that my sweet mother and/or her friends might read. So it’s gonna be ‘damn’. You get the idea.)
You know the type: They are loud and tough and make sure that everyone knows it. They shout from the rooftops that they don’t give a damn what anybody else thinks or does. They often REALLY love to include specific people in their rants- ya know, ones who might have more money, or who are well-liked, or, dare I say it, just more popular than them. They don’t actually really do or accomplish anything to speak of. They just appear to be bitter and angry. But they don’t give a damn, dammit!
When you find these type of people, it’s always about something inside them- it’s not about the people they’re mad at. Somewhere along the way, something happened. And depending on their own personal experiences and traumas, it triggered some deep-seated issue. Instead of taking responsibility and healing themselves, they’ve decided to make sure everyone knows it’s somebody else that is the problem. And they’ll continue to puff out their chest.
I’ve also come to find out that these people don’t end up doing much. And aren’t too happy. Yeah, they get by. But they’re so focused on being mad at the world, that they don’t take the time to look inside their own life to make it enjoyable.
Turns out, the good stuff is the goal: Pursuing something you love. Giving a damn about something. Making a difference. Leading a fulfilling life, whatever that looks like to you.
And yes, I’m shouting this part:
THE NOT GIVING A DAMN SHOULD COME WHILE YOU PURSUE THAT GOOD STUFF. NOT IN PLACE OF IT.’
Just to really drive this home, I’ll give you an example. My niece wants to get matching tattoos. I will happily get this tattoo, because I love her so much. I will not be concerned about other people’s opinions on this topic, or how they feel about tattoos. I’m simply getting it because it will make us happy.
Now if I start making sure that EVERYONE and their dog knows that I just don’t give a DAMN how they feel about tattoos, and screw you if you don’t like them, and you’re so lame and I’m so cool? THAT’S the gross energy I’m talking about.
Get the tattoo. Love it. And move on to the next awesome thing in your life.
Cheers to focusing on moving forward, looking inward, and not making ‘Not Giving a Damn’ your entire personality.
Because not being a negative and bitter cow, and instead pursuing your best, most awesome life is Luxuriousy Dope. 🖤
